Next, slowly start to phase out the products you don’t need. Use them up until they’re gone, or give them away to a friend. Finally, emphasize the importance of cleansing and moisturizing skin every day. These two steps will keep skin healthy and happy even with a reduced number of products.

What to do if you have a lot of skincare products

If you have a lot of skincare products, it can be tough to figure out what to do with them all. Here are a few tips on how to deal with a large collection of skincare products.

First, take inventory of what you have. Go through all of your products and decide which ones you use and need, and which ones you can get rid of. It can be helpful to group similar products together so you can see how many different types of products you have. For example, if you have five different moisturizers, that’s probably too many. Start by identifying which products you don’t need. If you’re not sure, ask yourself this question: does this product perform a function that another product in my routine already performs? For example, do you need both a toner and an essence? If the answer is no, then get rid of the unnecessary product.

Next, phase out unneeded products. If you don’t know which items you don’t need, here are some products you can cut out:

  • Most Single-Ingredient Serums – BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid), Niacinimide, Retinol, etc. These can all really rack up in amount and cost, and introduce complications to your natural skin’s barrier. Accumulating too many of these can make you feel like you need to be a scientist to concoct your ultimate skin routine.
  • Eye cream – your moisturizer will do just fine.
  • Multiple Active Ingredient Products – many acne fighting products and sunscreens contain actives. You don’t need multiple products (cleansers, toners, serums, etc.) with actives.

If you know you don’t need a product, but you’re attached to it, you can reduce how much you use until you can live without it. This process might take some time, but it’ll be worth it in the end.

What you really need

Finally, focus on gently cleansing and moisturizing your skin every day. These two steps are essential for healthy skin, so make sure they’re part of your daily routine. You can use a Konjac sponge with water to cleanse and exfoliate, which is especially good for days when you haven’t worn makeup. (Remember, over-cleansing can have negative effects on the skin’s natural moisture barrier and pH, leading to irritation and dryness.) And please! Try not to skip the sunscreen either. SPF sunscreen is an essential product. You can kill two birds with one stone by using a moisturizing SPF sunscreen if you really want to. Keep a travel size in your bag or car to have with you every day. Once you get into the habit of cleansing and moisturizing regularly, you might find that you don’t need as many other products.

Simplifying your skincare routine can have a lot of benefits. Not only will you save time and money, but you might also find that your skin is happier with fewer products. So why not give it a try?
